Would you like to enjoy a great view of nature while practicing yoga? Do you enjoy running before yoga?

Participate in both the yoga and the run or choose one based on your interests!

We are all a part of nature. Come feel the benefits of movement through and within nature.

This weekly workshop helps you learn to connect with nature through yoga and trail running. Come for the run, come for yoga, or attend both! During yoga you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Los Alamos canyons, skies, and wildlife! Watch the clouds float by as you flow your body, breath, and spirit through guided yoga sequences geared toward your specific needs and goals as a student. Learn tools to help your body and mind feel grounded, strong and healthy. This class by Christa Tyson is a true Los Alamos gem.

The pre-yoga trail run is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The run will start and end at the nature center. We will run 3-4 miles at a 12-14 min/mi pace. Exploring the trails is a great way to warm up the body before yoga. For the run please wear sturdy trail running shoes and bring a water bottle.

Yoga is from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and is an all-levels class. Modifications will be made for beginner-advanced, with various options for expanding your practice. This class will meet outside on the nature center patio when the weather permits. On cooler days we will practice indoors. Please bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing.

Yoga and running are the Yin and Yang of fitness. They are not opposing forces, but complementary opposites that interact within a greater whole. Put simply, yoga can fill in where running falls short. This is particularly true in terms of strength, flexibility and mental acuity.

Perhaps the greatest reason for a runner to include regular yoga practice in his or her training is for injury prevention. Since even the most basic poses employ the major muscle groups as well as the smaller, underworked complementary muscles, yoga can help a runner identify weak spots that need attention prior to the development of an injury.

In the second sutra of The Yoga Sutras by Patanjali, he tells us “Yoga helps to still the chaos, the changing fluctuations of the mind.” Stilling the mind is a very challenging endeavor. The average person has almost 60,000 thoughts per day, and the mind is constantly moving from one thought to the next with a seemingly endless string of randomness. Experts believe that of those 60,000 thoughts, up to 80% can be negative. Both running and yoga can slow down your thoughts, add nature to the mix and each thought becomes more clear and meaningful.

Christa Tyson is a registered yoga instructor and has been teaching yoga since 2003. Trained in Hatha Yoga through ‘Yoga Yoga’ in Austin, TX. Her teaching style is a marriage between Viniyoga (therapeutic healing yoga), Ashtanga flow yoga and aspects of Anusara yoga.
